4896. Nominal duty : A term used in certain parts of India. The irrigators apply to the government for water required for their lands every season, in advance; they have to pay full water charges according to a sanctioned schedule, irrespective of the area they ultimately irrigate. The duty assumed in such cases is known as `nominal duty` and is equal to the area for which the permit has been granted divided by the mean supply for the base period.
