Caisson Chicago : Petit caisson employé dans des argiles moyennement tenaces d`environ 4 pieds de diamètre, garni de planches ajoutées en longueurs de 5 pieds et foncé jusqu`au sol ferme pour les fondations de piles. Le blindage en planches sur les côtés est maintenu en place par des cercles d`acier calés contre les côtés.

5838. Chicago caisson, or Chicago well : A small coffer dam used in medium stiff clays, about 1.2 metres diameter, lined with planks added in 1.5 metres lengths and sunk to hard ground for pier foundations. The plank sheeting to the sides is held in place by steel rings wedged against the sides.
